William Wordsworth was a very important poet in the English Romantic period. He laid a solid foundation for the development of English Romantic poetry. His famous works are numerous, such as “Lyric Ballads”(co published with Coleridge),“The Excursion”,“The Prelude” and so on.These poetry collections all focus on thinking about the community relationship among nature, human and society. In recent years, although the research of community has received attention from scholars, there have been few studies on individual cases of Wordsworth’s poems and revealing his idea of community. Therefore, this thesis focuses on exploring and studying the idea of community in Wordsworth’s poems. The thesis finds that in Wordsworth’s poems, there are many descriptions of harmonious habitation between humans and non humans in nature, including the common material living space of humans and non humans, the guidance of nature to humans in life, and cultural inheritance through traditional ceremony and virtues to maintain the establishment and development of the community.Through these descriptions,Wordsworth expressed the idea that humans and nature are increasingly becoming a closely connected habitation community. This thesis attempts to take“Lyric Ballads”,“The Excursion”,“The Prelude” and some other poems of Wordsworth as the text research objects.By using Raymond Williams’ s community thought theory and eco-criticism,this thesis explores the idea of habitation community in his poems. The first chapter focuses on the physical basis in Wordsworth’s thinking of the habitation community. On the one hand, nature,as a non human habitat, provides a living environment and material source for animals and plants. On the other hand, human habitation relies on the material foundation of nature and human labor for survival, demonstrating a value of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. These all reveal that the physical basis is the survival premise for animals, plants and humans in the habitation community. The second chapter explores the spiritual guidance in Wordsworth’s thinking of habitation community. This spiritual guidance manifests in two aspects.Firstly, nature has an enlightening effect on human spirit, inspiring people’s humanistic care and pushing people to create the value of life.Secondly, nature has a healing effect on human spirit, helping people break through spiritual difficulties and promoting their exploration of life. These all reveal that spiritual guidance is a common requirement of thought for humans living in the community. The third chapter explores Wordsworth’s reflections on the role of cultural inheritance in the stability of the habitation community. The inheritance of traditional rituals and virtues not only reflects the identity of each member within the community, but also benefits the stability and development of the community. These all reveal that cultural inheritance is a key factor in the stability and development of the habitation community.Through the above three chapters of argumentation, this thesis concludes that Wordsworth criticized the social class division and the destruction of the natural environment caused by the Industrial Revolution through his description of the habitation community in his poems. In response,he called on people to value the natural environment, their shared spiritual home, and their cultural inheritance of human society.
