This is a translation report based on the translation practice of the source text excerpted from Chapters 9 to 12 of the book The Diplomatic Relations of Great Britain and the United States. It is written by Robert Balmain Mowat,a leading European scholar of diplomatic history. On account of a wealth of detailed historical documents, the author objectively describes the major diplomatic events that took place between Great Britain and the United States from the late 18 th century to the early 20 th century and expounds on the dynamic process of their diplomatic relations. The work includes a large number of historical facts with concise and logical diction, making it an excellent historical nonfiction with significant translation value. In this translation practice,Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory was selected as the guiding theory.According to the Text Typology Theory, the historical nonfiction mainly expresses historical facts, and is a typical informative text.So its translation purpose is to convey true information to target readers. However, the source contains a large number of proper nouns, technical terms and complicated sentences, which constitute the main difficulties in the translation practice.Accordingly, the translator actively consulted the background information for a comprehensive understanding of the source text and finally adopted domestication translation strategy as the main, and foreignization as the supplementary.Besides,in the translation practice, the translator also flexibly applied some translation methods and skills to pursue the faithfulness and expressiveness of the target text, such as literal translation, liberal translation, conversion, addition, recasting and division. With the guidance of Text Typology Theory, this report explores its guiding significance for the translation of historical nonfiction, and summarized the corresponding translation strategies, methods and techniques of informative texts in the analysis of translation cases. It is expected that this report will provide a reference for the translation of similar texts in the future.
