A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of The WTO Annual Report 2022 (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

This is an E-C translation practice report whose translation material is excerpted from the 5^thand 6^thchapter of the WTO Annual Report 2022.The translation practice is conducted from the perspective of the Skopos theory based on previous studies.Corresponding translation methods for lexicons,sentences and charts are put forward according to the three fundamental concepts in the Skopos theory-language function,translation brief and function plus loyalty.The source text of the translation practice is a business text.In terms of language function,the majority of the content belongs to informative texts,which focus on fulfilling the informative function in translation.Meanwhile,it also has expressive texts and operative texts,which focus on fulfilling the expressive function and appellative function respectively in translation.Besides,the translation practice is guided by a formulated translation brief and seeks a harmony among participants in the translation process for realizing the function plus loyalty principle.Therefore,translation methods including established equivalent,particularization and addition are employed for the translation of lexicons.For the translation of sentences,division,pretreatment,shift in rhyme and semantic translation are utilized.Regarding translation of charts,addition and mistake revision in the translation are applied.This translation practice proves that the Skopos theory has a guiding role in the translation of business texts represented by the translation material,resulting in producing more adequate translations.The theory can also explain the translation action during the translation process.It is hoped that the translation practice can provide a reference for other translators of similar texts.
