A Report On C-E Translation Of X Brand Automobile Maintenance Manual (Excerpts) Based On Newmark’s Translation Theory

Since 2021,China’s auto exports have seen an explosive round of growth,with Europe and other high-end overseas markets performing particularly well.Chinese vehicle companies have been trying to innovate,and their products are becoming increasingly competitive.With the increasing export volume,the quality of after-sales service must not lag behind,with professional and reliable car repair manuals occupying a very important position,which guarantees that the vehicles are always in good working order.This report selects three chapters from X Brand Automobile Maintenance Manual--Internet of Vehicle,Advanced Driving Assistance System,and Around View Monitor--for study.Guided by Newmark’s translation theory,the paper analyses the translation methods involved in the text,using two important strategies:semantic translation and communicative translation,considering the textual characteristics of automotive English.To achieve the fidelity of the translation in conveying the original message,the translator examines the text from the perspectives of lexical,syntactic,and textual,respectively.The lexical level is based on semantic translation,combining literal and free translation methods to reproduce the source text.To address the issue of obscure automotive terminology,the translator consults dictionaries and specialized related materials to explain it.For the dynamic characteristics of Chinese,English translation with contextualized word class conversion to conform to the static features of the target language.At the syntactic level,communicative translation is the main body.According to the differences between Chinese and English,the translator reorganizes the source text,which is mainly short sentences,employing logical relationship manifestation,morphological conversion and adding subjects,etc.,to highlight key information,enhance the objectivity and persuasiveness of the scientific and technical English presentation,and make it more acceptable to readers.At the textual level,to reduce the target reader’s resistance to comprehending the discourse,the translator focuses on the articulation and coherence of the discourse and reproduces the original as accurately as possible by adding articulation words,choosing personal and demonstrative references,as well as using substitution and omission.To sum up,this translation practice enriches the research materials of Newmark’s translation theory to some extent and provides a reference for English for Science and Technology translation.Accordingly,this theory also provides ideas for the translator to solve various problems encountered in the translation process.Ensure the accuracy of information transmission and improve the quality of automobile after-sales service.
