The automotive manufacturing industry has achieved notable advancements due to the rapid development of modern technology,leading to enhanced import and export activities and closer domestic and international trade exchanges.The translation of automobile maintenance manuals is a crucial aspect of the automobile exportation process.It serves the purpose of providing repairers and other relevant users with precise and professional information,which is essential for ensuring the safety of automobiles and enhancing the user experience.Catford’s translation shift theory can scientifically and accurately guide the translation of scientific and technological texts according to different levels in terms of vocabulary,grammar and sentences.The maintenance manual is a professional text containing a large number of automobile terms,belonging to scientific and technological texts.Therefore,the Catford’s translation shift theory is chosen as the theoretical guidance.Guided by Catford’s translation shift theory,this report analyzes the original text from two angles: level shift and category shift.The level shift focuses on the shift of vocabulary and grammar in sentences,such as the shift of singular and plural in Chinese and English vocabulary,the verb mood shift and lexical shift,and the shift of past tense,future tense,and other tenses;the category shift focuses on the structure shift,class shift,and unit shift,such as the shift of active voice and passive voice,the shift of pre-attribute and post-attribute,and the shift of topic prominence and subject prominence in structure shift;emphasize the shift of verbs and nouns,as well as verbs and prepositions,in terms of class shift;at the unit shift,vocabulary and phrases are converted to adapt to the reading habits of the target audience.This translation report has five parts in total.The first part is an overview of the overall project,including the background,significance and requirement of the project and the structure of the report;the second part is the translation process of the maintenance manual,which includes the preparation for translation,the mid-term problems of translation and the post translation editing;the third part is the introduction and application of Catford’s translation shift theory;the fourth part is the case analysis in the maintenance manual,which selects representative example sentences for translation and analysis based on the level shift and category shift under the translation shift theory;the fifth part is the summary of this translation,describing the major findings and limitation of this translation,and providing relevant suggestions.
