Mexican director Alejandro González I?árritu has a special position in the world of cinema today.With his exquisite narrative skills and unique observation perspective,he injected the passion and charm unique to Mexico into world movies.As Mexicans who have settled in the United States for many years,their cultural identity is ambiguous and uncertain.The dynamic changes and contradictions of Inaritu’s cultural identity are directly reflected in his works.His works not only reflect the contradiction and struggle between transnational capitalism and local nationalism in the process of globalization,but also reflect the implosion and fragmentation of local consciousness caused by commercialization and marketization,and more importantly,reflect the confusion and confusion of individual cultural identities mixed in complex environments.This article will start from the analysis of Inaritu’s film texts,based on postcolonial theory,identity theory,and film semiotics theory,and combine text analysis with theoretical application.Combining the personal experience of Inaritu with the cultural traditions of the Mexican nation,as well as the era background under globalization,enables the analysis of directors and film texts to be interpreted in a broader and more comprehensive perspective.At the same time,placing the construction of Inaritu’s cultural identity in the postcolonial context,this paper analyzes and elucidates the characteristics of Inaritu’s own cultural identity expressed in his works at different stages through textual analysis,and attempts to capture the changing trajectory of the director’s cultural identity in his works.Through the textual analysis of Inaritu’s works,the changes in the cultural identity of directors are divided into three important stages,which are also analyzed and elucidated as the three main contents of this article.The first part is about departure and search:the escape of Mexican national identity and the search for new cultural identity.In this stage,with the continuous involvement of transnational capital in the creation of director films,the Mexican cultural characteristics contained in Inaritu’s works gradually peel off.From the display of the split and decadent Mexican society and the escape of self identity symbols in "Amores perros," to the presentation of the Mexican national self as "otherness" in "Powder Keg," to "21gram," a cultural expression that is completely different from the core of Mexican national culture.This stage is the process of Inaritu’s escape from the Mexican national identity and the establishment of the identity of the"colored elite" in the United States,and this process has once again written the national fable of the departure and search of the contemporary Mexican nation.The second part is about climbing and falling:the establishment and collapse of the ideal identity of"world citizen".At this stage,Inaritu,who settled in the United States,fell into anxiety about his own identity.He wanted to express a "world citizen" identity in the film as a "legitimate" source of his dual cultural identity.In "Babel",he resorted to a film utopia of cross ethnic suffering to resolve ethnic estrangement.In "Biutiful",he projected his ideal identity as the "intermediary" in the film,and in "Bird Man",he announced the failure of his ideal identity with the fall of the protagonist.At this stage,Inaritu went from building "world movies" and "world citizens" with enthusiasm to the fall of his ideal identity,and once again fell into thinking and confusion about his own cultural identity.The third part is "Resurrection and Homecoming":the recall of national memory and the return and integration of national identity.At this stage,Inaritu began to continuously integrate elements of Mexican national culture into his works,achieving the integration and return of his own identity.In "The Revenant",the pursuit of Indian national memories is accomplished through the adaptation of legendary American images,and then in "Bardo",personal experiences and reflections on Mexican national history are presented in a spatiotemporal manner.At this stage,Inaritu,with its American experience,integrated and returned to its Mexican national identity.This article summarizes and sorts out all of Inaritu’s works from the perspective of cultural identity,points out the characteristics of different cultural identities displayed between different works through textual analysis,and analyzes and summarizes the process of cultural identity evolution reflected in Inaritu’s works.It also points out the crises and challenges faced by the national identity of the third world under the surging tide of globalization,as well as the special mixed state it presents,and the significance of taking root in its own national culture.
