A SPOC-based Study On The Effectiveness Of Instructional Interaction Design On Online English Learning Engagement

With the continuous advancement of educational informatization,online education is developing in full swing,and online learning methods such as MOOC and SPOC are also constantly developing,and are receiving more and more attention in universities.The increase of online learning is helpful to promote the reorganization and update of college English teaching content and methods,so as to achieve the goal of promoting learning.However,students are more likely to have low engagement behaviors when they participate in online learning activities.How to promote the engagement in online learning environment is the key to ensure the quality of students’ online learning.Teaching interaction is one of the key factors affecting learning engagement.Therefore,this study taken 44 undergraduates in S University as the research objects and carriesd out teaching interaction design based on the SPOC course of "Basic English Writing".Through data analysis of SPOC platform,combined with questionnaire measurement and semi-structured interview,the effectiveness of the teaching interaction design in learners’ behavioral,cognitive,emotional and social engagement was studied.The preliminary results of the study are:(1)In the first round of "Basic English Writing" SPOC course more than 80% of learners had not fully studied SPOC courses,and their behavioral engagement was low;most of the students seldom reviewed after learning,and the overall score of the final exam was in a normal state.They did not deeply participate in the study of relevant content.The number of students’ Posting interaction in the comprehensive discussion area was very small,and the frequency of learners’ social interaction was low.A small number of learners had negative emotions towards the course learning.(2)With the support of the interaction strategy,the experimental class was higher than the control class in the four dimensions of behavior,cognition,emotion and social engagement,and there were significant differences between the experimental class and the control class in the dimensions of cognition and social engagement.(3)Learner level had a significant impact on learners’ cognitive engagement,but had no significant impact on the other three dimensions,and the degree of influence in descending order was cognitive engagement,social engagement and behavioral engagement,and had the least impact on emotional engagement.Finally,this study provided some suggestions to improve students engagement in SPOC online learning: We should build an interactive platform to enhance learners’ emotional and social engagement,and various forms of teacher-student interaction are helpful to improve students’ behavioral engagement.In order to cultivate learners’ learning habits,it is important to pay attention to learners’ self-interaction,and to provide individual guidance according to language level is also an important part.
