A C-E Translation Report On The Worldly:Everydayness And Life Buried In History (Excerpts)

Translation of classical Chinese masterpiece has always been the key research object of many scholars and translators,and such translation studies can be seen as an important chain that promotes cultural exchange and communication between China and the West.The historical texts that record the daily life of ancient Chinese people are of high research and translation value,because this kind of works are mixed with ancient and modern Chinese and the content is detailed and comprehensive.In view of this,this report aims to analyze the translation of the book The Worldly: Everydayness and Life Buried in History written by Zhao Dongmei,professor of history of Peking University,and summarizes the translation practice,and writes the Chinese-English translation practice report.As a popular historical text,The Worldly is distinctive in writing.The source text not only uses culture-loaded words and a large number of quotations from classical Chinese to reflect the rich cultural connotations,but also frequently uses run-on sentences to comprehensively process massive amounts of information.Reproducing these features in translation has become a challenge for the translator.Therefore,the translator concluded translation difficulties and problems from the lexical and syntactical level,and summarized appropriate translation methods and strategies by analyzing typical examples.For the difficulties of lexical level,the translator adopts methods such as liberal translation and transliteration plus annotation to fully demonstrate cultural connotations;for the difficulties of syntactical level,the translator adopts methods such as linear translation,division and omission to refine and reproduce the complex information in the source text.In this translation practice,the translator gains a deeper understanding of popular historical texts and summarizes translation methods for culture-loaded words,classical Chinese,and run-on sentences in The Worldly.The translator hopes to provide reference for this type of translation,so as to spread Chinese culture better.
