This article aims to organize and analyze the depiction of guqin(a traditional Chinese musical instrument)in literati painting during the Song and Ming dynasties. With emotional metaphors as the starting point,it interprets the symbolic meanings of guqin imagery and literati landscape painting, attempting to explore the relationship between the literati community and their depictions of guqin in painting.Through the analysis of literature, inscriptions, and artwork, this article seeks to extract the important role of guqin imagery in expressing literati emotions and sentiments, and to comprehend the artistic and existential realms that Song and Ming literati painting aimed to achieve through their creative practices.Furthermore, this article also examines the cultural personality and emotional characteristics of the literati community,in order to provide relevant references and inspirations for the study of literati painting, guqin imagery, and landscape painting creation and development.Additionally, starting from the characteristics of the literati community and guqin objects, this article analyzes their similarities through organization and induction, and explores the common causes of their similarities.Literati painters have always been concerned with the emotions beyond the painted surface, and guqin imagery provides multiple aspects for the emotional metaphorical expressions of literati painters. In the first chapter of this article, the definition, development, and relevant social background of guqin imagery are briefly introduced. The second chapter focuses on analyzing the artistic expressions and related art criticism of guqin imagery in Song and Ming literati painting, providing visual evidence for the analysis of emotional metaphorical expressions in the following chapters. The third chapter mainly discusses the emotional orientation and expression of guqin imagery in Song and Ming literati painting, analyzing the basis of its emotional construction and using this as a starting point to further discuss the extended meanings and changes in emotional expression, leading to the metaphorical symbolic meaning generated by emotions.Building on the discussion of emotions in the previous chapter, the fourth chapter further analyzes the emotional metaphors present in guqin-themed works of Song and Ming literati painting, discussing them from three perspectives: aesthetic, psychological evolution, and aesthetic significance. The logical progression of the third and fourth chapters forms a cohesive analysis of the emotional metaphorical expressions of guqin imagery. The fifth chapter starts from the influence of guqin imagery on literati painters and discusses its significance in the creative and aesthetic aspects of the literati community. This article employs basic methods such as textual analysis and image analysis to demonstrate the artistic characteristics of the literati community and guqin imagery in ancient Chinese painting, seeking to uncover the regularity of their creative expression and the inherent relationship with their emotional experiences.Combining text and images, the article uses the principles of formal analysis appropriately to conduct material research and better showcase the nature of textual research, making the theoretical structure and scholarly context more clear.
