| The Chinese Character of Imagery is a poetry anthology by Yu Zihan,a Guizhou writer,in which the poet embodies the relationship between the spiritual realm of man and modern man through the form of language art. With the rapid development of society, translation seems a rather effective way for the international communication of culture, which is not a correspondence of words, but a constant choice of words,a constant deliberation and a constant reflection, taking into account different social factors and circumstances. The thesis will choose the self-translation of The Chinese Character Imagery as the research corpus, based on a sub-model of the collaborative translation model,i.e.author-translator collaborative translation model, and based on the intertextuality in poetry and the functional equivalence theory in translation,in order to understand how the collaborative translation model serves as a guiding theory in the translation process, with a view to supporting the theoretical feasibility of the collaborative translation model and its practicability in Chinese-English translation practice. The thesis aims to prove the theoretical feasibility of the collaborative translation model and its operability in the practice of Chinese-English translation. It is found that in the practice of Chinese-English collaborative translation of prose poetry genre, listening to the original author’s thoughts plays a positive impact on the translator’s choice of vocabulary, sentence reconstruction, imagery expression, rhetorical techniques, etc.,it can better reflect the thoughts and feelings what the original author wants to express.Firstly,in the pursuit of lexical meaning and cooperation of usage intention, the original author interprets the meaning of the words in the original poem deeply, which is then absorbed by the translator and converted into functionally equivalent English words through literal translation, free translation,or annotation, thus achieving the purpose of the original author’s lexical use and the expression of the original emotion.Secondly, sentence reconstruction, including the construction of ordinary sentences and the construction of rhetorical sentences, etc.is better revealed. In the original text, the author chooses to use broken sentences, sentences without subjects, and various rhetorical devices in order to highlight emotions. The translator understands the emotions expressed by the original author, through discussion with the original author and consultation with relevant scholars,re-adjusts the sentences of the original text in terms of vocabulary and syntax, then combines them with the sentences expressing emotions in English. The translation is constructed in such a way that it accurately conveys the message and emotion of the original text, while at the same time achieving readability and aesthetic requirements. Finally, the translator chooses either a free translation or “ free translation +annotation ” to reproduce the imagery of the original poem and thus accurately convey the poet’s emotions. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly introduces the research background, research significance, research questions and methods as well as the structural framework of the thesis. The second chapter is a review of the literature, which focuses on the current situation of domestic and international research on the collaborative translation model and the current situation of research on The Chinese Character Imagery, and suggests the parts of the collaborative translation model that can be improved or enriched, involving theoretical constructs and practical operations,so as to form a relatively novel collaborative translation model and operation mechanism for prose poems by local Chinese writers. The third chapter is the theoretical framework of the thesis, which is mainly based on the traditional oral-written model, and primary-auxiliary model,so as to construct the framework of its sub-model,i.e.author-translator collaborative translation model. The fourth chapter is the collaborative translation process and text analysis, which is also the key chapter of the thesis, the author’s background is understood mainly through interview cooperation before translation;in the translation process,in which the translator belongs to the second author in the target language text, rather than the first author, and the translator emphasises the original author’s evocations rather than the translator’s rewrites, putting the ideas and language of the literary work in the first place;in the post-translation we discuss with the original author for many times, adjust or modify the translation in accordance with the opinions of the original author, the negotiation between the translator and the original author, and the translator’s reflection on the points that deserve consideration. The fifth chapter concludes the thesis, pointing out the shortcomings of the study and proposing a model of collaborative translation as well as the future research prospects of The Chinese Character Imagery. |
