Literature tells some perplexed unspeakable truths in its special way without explicitly mentioning them, although every word of it may be so telling to reveal them.Feminist literature,as an important genre of literature, serves as a realistic expression of feminist thoughts and tells the truth about women. At present, there have been many studies on the translation of feminist literary works in the academic world, which mainly focus on the analysis and exploration of the feminist ideas and their translation, but the studies on the translator’s own translation of feminist works are somewhat inadequate, and there are even fewer studies on feminist novel translation practice from the perspective of Eco-translatology.In view of this,it is necessary and innovative to carry out a study on the translation of feminist novels from the perspective of Eco-translatology.Based on Eco-translatology,this thesis discusses and analyzes the“multi-dimensional selective adaptation and adaptive selection” in the E-C translation practice of a feminist novel Rules for Being a Girl co-authored by Candace Bushnell and Katie Cotugno.Based on the case study, the present author explores how to make appropriate transformations in the language dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension, and how the translator should fulfill its responsibilities in the translation of feminist novels,so as to make the translation better fit in with the translational eco-environment.The thesis starts with a brief introduction to the research background, task profile, significance of the task and thesis structure. Then the author offers a brief account of the preparation before translating, translating process and post-translating work, with special reference to the analysis of the features of feminist novels and the analysis of the features of the source text Rules for Being a Girl. Then, the present author introduces Hu Gengshen’s Eco-translatology,which mainly involves “translator’s subjectivity”,“translator’s responsibility” and “selective adaptation and adaptive selection”.In the following body part, based on the “three-dimensional transformations” of the Eco-translatology,the author analyses a number of examples to explore how she dealt with some specific problems in her translation practice. The present study finds that translators should give full play to their subjectivity, shoulder the responsibility of conveying feminist ideas in the original feminist novels in the whole process of translation by using suitable translation methods and techniques to make appropriate adaptive selection and selective adaptation,so that the translation can linguistically, culturally and communicatively fit the ecological environment of the target language.Specifically, from linguistic dimension,it may be necessary to make shift of word class and transformation of hyphenated compound words,as well as make change of the subject and sentence structure. From cultural dimension, addition and annotation may be adopted to handle culture specific items, especially those terms about the historical events related to feminism may need to be annotated, and vulgar contents which are unsuitable for young readers should be deleted or abandoned. From communicative dimension, translators should retain and reproduce the original graphological font features that the author deliberately represents, and should convey the communicative intentions of the dialogues of the original work by making proper pragmatic transformation. It is hoped that this thesis can provide some new ideas and useful reference for the translation of feminist novels.
