As an important part of English teaching,reading teaching plays an important role in improving students’ reading ability and cultivating core literacy of English subject.At present,due to the influence of exam-oriented education,teachers pay more attention to the knowledge teaching of vocabulary and grammar,and ignore the interpretation of reading texts.Moreover,the single teacher-led teaching mode cannot give full play to students’ subjective initiative,which leads to the decrease of students’ interest in reading and reading ability.As a new teaching mode,Problem Chain teaching mode can effectively remedy the shortcomings of current reading teaching.Problem Chain teaching mode guides students to focus on reading texts by designing a series of linked questions with moderate difficulty,arouses students’ desire to explore reading texts,and thus effectively improves students’ reading interest and reading ability.Based on the Zone of Proximal Development and Constructivism Learning Theory,this study applies Problem Chain teaching mode to English reading teaching in junior high school and explores two questions:(1)Can Problem Chain teaching mode improve students’ reading ability?What are specific effects?(2)Can Problem Chain teaching mode improve students’ reading interest?This study selects the students from two classes in Grade eight of a junior high school in Shandong Province,and the two classes consists of 48 students respectively.A teaching experiment is carried out for four months.The experimental class uses Problem Chain teaching mode,and the control class uses the traditional reading teaching mode.The author collects and sorts out the experimental data through testing,questionnaire and interview.Then,the data of the tests and questionnaires of the two classes are imported into SPSS software for comparative analysis,and the experimental results are discussed in combination with the interview content.The results show:(1)Problem Chain teaching mode can improve students’ reading performance,and students’ reading ability has been significantly improved.Among them,Problem Chain teaching mode can improve students’ ability to understand details,to obtain the main idea and logical reasoning.In particular,there is a greater improvement in obtaining the main idea and logical reasoning,but this mode has no significant impact on the students’ ability to guess word meaning.(2)Problem Chain teaching mode can improve students’ interest in reading.Students solve problems in the problem chain through independent learning and group cooperation,which stimulates their curiosity and interest in reading texts.Due to the small number of selected samples and the limited time,there are some shortcomings in this study.However,in general,this study has achieved the expected results.Finally,according to the results and the problems in the research process,the author puts forward some teaching suggestions,so that they can provide some references for English reading teaching in junior high school.
