| Based on the translation of popular science and research texts in papermaking industry,this thesis explores the role of Register Theory in the translation of papermaking texts.China Pulp and Paper Industry(CPPI),the official journal of China Paper Association,is a Chinese scientific and technical journal for the papermaking industry that is distributed nationwide.In order to let more readers understand the new achievements and concepts of the modern papermaking industry,CPPI set up a column of popular science and research to publish popular science articles of the papermaking industry.The author is responsible for translating selected articles from oversea English periodicals for CPPI,and the report is written based on this translation practice.The popular science texts of the pulping and papermaking industry are characterized by the usage of papermaking technical terms,declarative tone,passive voice,nominal structure,and the application of rhetorical devices.In the process of translation,the author adopted Register Theory to guide text translation in the papermaking industry.This paper discusses the specific application of the "three elements" of Register Theory in the translation of the professional terminology,voice and tone,and rhetorical features in papermaking industry.Finally,the theory has been proved to have strong applicability in guiding the translation practice of the papermaking industry.This thesis confirms the feasibility of applying Register Theory in popular science dissemination through translation,which will expand the application of the theory.Also,it is hoped that the translation practice under the guidance of Register Theory in the pulping and papermaking industry will serve as a reference for the translation of the popular science works in other fields in the future. |
