The Ming Dynasty was an important period in the history of the development of Coastal Defense in China. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, the coastal defense system took the sanitary system as the core, and by the Jia Jing Emperor and the Wan Li Emperor period, the sanitary system gradually failed, and when the situation in Guangdong was necessary,it was necessary to make changes to the old coastal defense system with the sanitary system as the core.In 1535,Dai Jing carried out the reform of the recruitment of warships in Guangdong, and the government used taxes to hire civilian soldiers and ships to enrich coastal defense, replacing the guards who had lost their combat effectiveness, but the adjusted new coastal defense system had structural drawbacks: First, there was no sufficient source of money.Second, there is no reliable standing force along the coast. This led to the inability of the Guangdong authorities to respond during the Zhe lin Mutiny and the rebellion of the pirate Wu Ping.Wu gui fang planned to set up a new coastal defense system with the coastal six water military bases as the core. The process of eliminating pirates shows a concrete illustration of the link between coastal defense and the design of government systems. When the pirate Lin Feng was pacified, the two provinces of Fujian and Guangzhou were divided, and the Ming Court set up a deputy commander-in-chief on Nan’ao Island to coordinate the coastal defense of the two provinces.During the Long Qing Emperor and the Wan Li Emperor period, the Japanese pirates invaded western Guangdong twice, exposing the deficiencies of the water fortress defense system. After the adjustment of the location and quantity of the water villages, the coastal defense pattern with coastal water villages and recruiting and hiring ships as the mainstay, supplemented by the military strength of the sanitary system, has basically taken shape.During the reform of Guangdong’s coastal defense system during the Jia Jing Emperor and the Wan Li Emperor period, the unreasonable design of the bureaucratic system, frequent piracy and the financial difficulties from beginning to end continued to affect this transformation process. The lessons of Guangdong’s coastal defense reform during the Jia Jing Emperor and the Wan Li Emperor period of the Ming Dynasty still have reference significance for China’s maintenance of sea power and the passage of sea frontiers today.
