At the start of 2020,the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 disrupted the normal rhythm of teaching.Online teaching has become the focus since schools at all levels began to carry out online teaching comprehensively.This paper focuses on the translation of chapters 1 to 3 of the Undergraduate and Graduate STEM Students’ Experiences during COVID-19.The purpose of this translation practice is for further study of translation theories and skills.The theoretical knowledge is applied to guide translation practice and realize the optimization of translation.Guided by Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory,the case analysis is conducted at three levels: Lexical level,syntactical level and discourse level.The case analysis is utilized to analyze the source text and the translation techniques are explored at different levels based on the Communicative Translation Theory.With regard to the lexical level,three translation techniques can be applied:amplification,omission and conversion.The meanings of the word are flexibly selected according to the context of the translation.In terms of the syntactical level,the source text is an educational informational text which emphasizes objective facts and has a higher application frequency of passive sentences,so the translator mainly studies the passive sentences in the source text.It is found that the passive sentences in the source text can be translated into explicit passive sentences,semi-explicit passive sentences and implicit passive sentences.At the level of discourse,translator concentrates on the logical and coherent nature of the discourse,with the aim of maintaining the objectivity of the overall language.The translator found that there are few Chinese translation studies on online teaching in China,so this translation practice is innovative to some extent.Under the guidance of the Communicative Translation Theory,various translation methods are flexibly applied in this practice report to promote the correct transmission of the original message of the translated text,so that the reader of the target language and the reader of the source language have the same or similar feeling.This translation practice report is intended to provide a useful reference for similar translation work in the future.
