During the Liao,Song,Jin and Yuan dynasties, the twenty-four filial piety images, based on the texts of the twenty-four filial stories, were widely decorated in tombs under the influence of social culture and ethics. This paper takes the twenty-four filial images in tombs from the Liao,Song,Jin and Yuan dynasties as the object of study, focusing on the fixed ready-made modes, styles and inscriptions of the twenty-four filial images, with the aim of showing the spiritual thinking, working and living conditions, and cultural exchange and dissemination of the people of the time. The article focuses on the following issues:firstly, the existence of fixed ready-made modes of twenty-four filial piety images during the Liao,Song,Jin and Yuan dynasties, with one to five fixed modes for each filial figure, which did not change according to the period, region or image carrier. The use of manuscripts and the work of artisans,as well as the role of manuscripts and artisans in the modeling of the Twenty-Four Filial Piety images, can be uncovered through the twenty-four filial piety brick carvings and artisan inscriptions excavated from the tombs in the Houma area.Secondly, although the twenty-four filial figures on different carriers vary in style, the composition, modelling and other formal motifs reflect the absorption of earthly art forms in the burial twenty-four filial figures. The different audiences for the above-ground art forms, such as screens, scroll paintings and prints, combined with the burial images and documentary material, provide a glimpse into the changing attitudes of the people towards the Twenty-Four Filial Piety from the Northern Song to the Yuan dynasties.Lastly, the texts of the twenty-four filial piety images in the tombs are characterised by a ’stabilisation of expression’,with the texts showing four fixed procedures.A comparison of the texts of the Twenty-Four Filial Piety images in the Jin tombs of the Changzhi area with the text of the Goryeo ’Record of Filial Piety’ shows that there is an overlap between the two.In addition, the ancient texts are used to trace the spread of the Twenty-Four Filial Piety to the east.
