| This report is an English-Chinese translation practice report. The source text was selected from Chinese Repository, which is a periodical published by foreign sinologist in 1832.Topics are ranging from Chinese language, culture, economy, geography to Chinese government and politics,as well as the relations with other countries, which almost covered all aspects of China. There is no doubt that this material is of great significance for us to explore and study. It is a pity, however, that there is no Chinese version or translated clips of this important historical materials. Therefore, the translator selected three passages as source texts for this translation task.By applying Peter Newmark’s text typology theory, the translator analyzed the text type and text features of the source text.It turns out that the source text belongs to informative text, therefore the translator mainly adopted communicative translation theory in the translation process.By offering plenty of examples, the translator fully analyzed the translation process from lexical, syntactic and textual level. At the lexical level, the translator adopted annotation, conversion of part of speech, substitution, and choice of word meaning in order to convey the meaning of words completely. Methods including conversion of voice, negation, reversing, embedding and recasting were employed to make the effect of translation on the target readers the same as the effect of source text on the target readers to the greatest extent at the syntactic level. At the textual level, the translator discussed the cohesion and coherence by applying different translation techniques including adding conjunctions, reference words, and ellipsis which ensure the communicative function of the text. |
