As the main textbook of traditional Chinese language education, the Chinese Primer Classics have achieved the “integration of language and culture” in the teaching process, and have played an important role in the transmission and dissemination of Chinese language and culture. This study selects the Chinese Primer Classic Children’s Knowledge Treasury as the material for experimental teaching, and conducts an experimental study on the “integration of language and culture” of reading teaching for international students at the intermediate and advanced levels, which helps to promote the creative transformation and innovative development of the Chinese Primer Classics in international Chinese education, and provides a reference for building a Chinese communication platform in the new era and promoting the construction of a global communication system of Chinese language and culture.International students at the intermediate and advanced levels have already mastered a certain amount of vocabulary and common syntactic resources, which can meet the basic needs of daily communication;however, how to further enhance their Chinese cultural cultivation is a topic worthy of further discussion in Chinese language teaching. The use of traditional Chinese Primer Classics as supplementary teaching materials for reading can facilitate the“integration of language and culture”,and achieve an effective integration of language and cultural teaching in Chinese language teaching. The comprehensive content and numerous allusions to idioms of Children’s Knowledge Treasury help Chinese learners to further understand the culture of Chinese characters;its feature of explaining words with words and laying out allusions is also in line with the characteristics of learning Chinese as a second language, which makes it a unique advantage to apply Children’s Knowledge Treasury to the teaching of Chinese to international students at the intermediate and advanced levels. This study firstly analyses the potential value of the text of Children’s Knowledge Treasury for international Chinese language teaching based on its textual characteristics, mainly in terms of cultural teaching and vocabulary teaching.Secondly, the possibility of adapting Children’s Knowledge Treasury to international students’ reading materials for Chinese language teaching is investigated in the light of theories of importability and incidental acquisition of vocabulary, and the possibility of promoting a“integration of language and culture”.Then,a onesemester experiment was designed and conducted on the teaching of Children’s Knowledge Treasury in the context of the specific situation of Chinese language teaching for international students. The experimental data were analysed using SPSS statistical software, and the feedback from the students was obtained through questionnaires and interviews. The comparison of the experimental results and the feedback from the teaching confirmed that Children’s Knowledge Treasury can effectively promote the“integration of language and culture” to Chinese reading learning for international students. Finally,we reflect on the teaching process of the Children’s Knowledge Treasury and make suggestions for the rational application of the Children’s Knowledge Treasury to international Chinese language teaching in the new era, such as improving the comprehensibility of the teaching content, enhancing the diversity of teaching methods, and ensuring that the teaching content is adapted to modern social life, with a view to providing inspiration for the traditional Chinese Primer Classics to empower international Chinese language education in the new era.
