| On June 13,1933,Yang Xiaoshu formally proposed to issue a Popular Science magazine at the 108 th meeting of the China Science Society. On August 1 of the same year,Popular Science was officially released. From its inception in 1933 to its first suspension in 1950,it published 16 volumes and 272 issues. In 1953,Popular Science was handed over to Shanghai association for science and technology and continues to develop so far.The main object of this paper is the general theory of Popular Science from 1933 to 1949.This part of the article was written by famous experts. It is a general discussion of science. The specific issues discussed in the general theory is why China is backward, why Chinese science is backward, and how to promote the development of Chinese science through scientization. In the discussion of these issues, the thoughts of the authors in the general theory show the characteristics of pragmatism. But it’s not exactly the same, they show the characteristics of traditional Chinese thinking modes, which makes the view of science in the general theory integrate the Chinese values with morality as the core while using methods from Pragmatism. This view of science is a change of pragmatism according to the actual situation, which is suitable for the scientific development of China during the Republic of China.Popular Science covers a wide range of contents. This paper mainly studies the characteristics and influence of the view of science in Popular Science during the Republic of China from the perspective of philosophy, through the methods of literature analysis and comparative analysis. And analyzes the characteristics of the authors’ view of science by sorting out the problems concerned and views held by the authors of the general theory of Popular Science.Understanding the characteristics of the view of Science in the Republic of China from a case.In the general theory, through the overview articles on science, the public can understand what science is and realize that science is very common in daily life.On the one hand,it can make people more convenient to live and enrich their spiritual world by enriching their own knowledge. On the other hand,it can gradually eliminate the backward idea caused by the lack of scientific knowledge, and then form a scientific world outlook. The authors of Popular Science believe that the lack of science is an important reason for China’s backwardness, and they believe that the factor that is not conducive to development of science is the lack of scientific knowledge and scientific methods of the Chinese general public. The Popular Science embodies the characteristics of pragmatism in the aspects of national spirit, scientific methods and paying attention to practical results. This similarity comes from the extensive influence of pragmatism in China and the experience of the authors of Popular Science studying in the United States. However, the viewpoint of the general theory of Popular Science is also inconsistent with pragmatism, that is,it recognizes the existence of an objective truth, which is different from the viewpoint of pragmatism that "usefulness is truth".Moreover,Popular Science does not blindly pursue the practical value of science. It recognizes the fundamental position of pure science, and emphasizes the disenchantment function of science. Moreover,Popular Science endows science with moral values, such as the requirements of "the whole world as one community " and " people are my brothers and all things are my kinds " and other moral values, which essentially has the moral core of Chinese philosophy. Therefore, the general theory of Popular Science shows a view of science of the integration of pragmatism and moral values of Chinese philosophy. |
