Among many modern and contemporary literary masters,Qian Zhongshu is not only a well-known literary scholar,but also a literary and artistic theorist with fruitful achievements.In particular,Qian Zhongshu’s research on the relationship between poetry and painting has high theoretical academic value and methodological guiding value.Qian Zhongshu’s theory of the relationship between poetry and painting is based on the traditional Chinese and Western poetry and painting theory,realizing the horizon integration of the laws of Chinese and Western poetry and painting,and promoting the process of the Sinicization of western literary theory.Moreover,Qian Zhongshu has always been based on the rich poetry and painting works in ancient China,comparing and interpreting the characteristics of poetry and painting,exploring the unique visual and emotional value of both sides,demonstrating the literary evaluation thought of “the poem contains painting,but painting can not fully express the meaning of poetry”,and exploring the common artistic aesthetic pursuit of poetry and painting.Qian Zhongshu analyzes the language media and image media relied on by poetry and painting,and explains the spatialization of the temporal media of poetry and the temporalization of spatial media in painting,so as to show the relativity of the boundaries of poetry and painting.By analyzing Qian Zhongshu’s inheritance and development of the theory in the Chinese and Western relationship between poetry and painting,this thesis shows his research path of discerning,integrating,and Circular interpretation in the study of poetry and painting relationship.Evidently,he realizes the fusion of Lessing’s heterogeneity views of relationship between poetry and painting and the practice of ancient Chinese art.Based on traditional Chinese poetry and painting theory,Qian Zhongshu proposes that poetry and painting,as two major fields of art,have both dissimilarity and similarity,and the similarity is based on the dissimilarity.Poetry and painting have the possibility of transcending their respective media,and rely on the transcendence of the medium to achieve higher achievements in art.In the era of the image when language is challenged by images,studying Qian Zhongshu’s theory of the relationship between poetry and painting will help us clarify the relationship between language and image,clarify the direction for promoting the symbiosis of literature and image,and provide method guidance for the mutual transformation of literature and images.
