| The thesis reports the translation practice of a Chinese essay, and the source text A Village Dance Party is selected from My Altay,a collection of essays written by Li Juan,a contemporary Chinese writer. This essay vividly depicts the ordinary life of the local people and tells a nice love story through a village dance party held by the Kazak people in Altay,Xinjiang. The translation practice aims to introduce the minority culture of Xinjiang to other countries and regions in the world;it is also expected to attract more foreign tourists and promote the local tourism development through the exotic features in the work.As a literary text, the essay is characterized by its regional, colloquial and vivid language. Thus, the translation should also reproduce the original style as much as possible and conforms to the reading habits of target readers. The translation difficulty lies in reproducing the style of the original text properly and taking the acceptability of the translation into account. In order to solve these problems, the translator, guided by the stylistic marker theory proposed by Liu Miqing, analyzes the style of the original text from the perspectives of registerial, lexical, syntactic, textual and rhetorical markers and reproduces the style in different degrees by means of corresponding, recasting and decoloring. In terms of registerial markers, the translator adopts the corresponding method to translate proper names dominated by Kazakh names.Considering the communicative purpose and cultural differences, the translator uses the corresponding and recasting methods to translate colloquial expressions and culture-loaded terms.Concerning lexical markers, the translator mainly employs the corresponding method supplemented by recasting and decoloring when dealing with action verbs, reduplicative words and modal particles. As for syntactic markers,run-on sentences and subjectless sentences are translated by the recasting method due to the differences between Chinese and Western thinking modes and the acceptability of target readers. As regards textual markers including direct speeches and interior monologues, the recasting method is also adopted. However, for the mix of long and short sentences, the translator uses the corresponding method to reproduce its style. When reproducing rhetorical markers such as personification, onomatopoeia and repetition, the translator employs the corresponding and decoloring methods.Through the translation practice, the translator has a profound understanding of stylistic marker theory, and the translatability of style and the feasibility of stylistic marker theory in prose translation are further verified. |
