The source text for this translation practice is an excerpt from the book Narrated Empires: Perceptions of Late Habsburg and Ottoman Multinationalism. The book, edited by Johanna Chovanec,Olof Heilo, focuses on the relationship between the current situation in Southeast Europe and the imperial history of the region. The excerpted chapter Ottoman Albanians in an Era of Transition: An Engagement with a Fluid Modern World discusses the importance of Ottoman Albanians in the Ottoman transition and their important contribution to the modernization and reform of the Ottoman Empire. The original text of this translation is an academic work that focus on the history, nationality and reform of the Empire. This kind of text is more concerned with the communication of information and is informative text. Therefore, the translator applies German translator Katharina Reiss’ s functionalist translation criticism theory,i.e.,Text Typology,as a guide, and summarizes the translation criteria of accuracy, integrality, fluency and logicality of informative texts inspired by Reiss’ s discussion to propose specific translation strategies for this translation practice. The translation practice report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is Introduction, which introduces the source, the background the author of the source text,as well as the purpose and significance of the study. The second chapter provides a description of the translation process, including the analysis of the original text and preparation of tools before translation, the analysis of the translated text during the translation process, and the review and revision after translation. The third chapter is an introduction to Katherina Reiss’ s Text Typology. The fourth chapter is Case Study, which is the key of this translation practice report. In this chapter, the translator mainly analyzes the translation cases in four aspects, namely, how to ensure the accuracy, integrality, fluency and logicality of the information in the target text.Chapter five is the summary and feedback of this translation practice.Through the translation practice, the translator hopes to provide translation references for Chinese scholars studying the late Ottoman Empire,so that they can have a deeper understanding of the aspects of social stratification and ethnic relations in the late Ottoman Empire. At the same time, under the guidance of Reiss’ s Text Typology, the translator summarizes the criteria for translating informative texts and applies specific translation strategies under the requirements of these criteria, with a view to providing some references for future translation practice of the same type.
