A Report On The Chinese-english Translation Of China Three Gorges River Geography And Water Culture (Excerpt)

This report is written based on the C-E translation practice of excerpts from Three Gorges River Geography and Water Culture which is issued in March,2021.This magazine faithfully reflects the constructive progress of the Three Gorges Project as well as important scientific and technological achievements,showing the development of the Three Gorges reservoir area and landscapes both in urban and rural regions.The chosen text mainly introduces historical origin and constructive process of Three Gorges Project,as well as profound impact on the Chinese people since the completion of the project.Considering the lack of previous research on English translation of this type of text,which has led many foreigners to know nothing or even misunderstand about the project,the author hopes that English readers can better understand the Three Gorges and China Construction through this translation practice.According to the characteristics of the text,this report mainly uses Text Typology and domestication and foreignization strategies as theoretical foundation.First of all,Text Typology is applied to analyze and divide the text content into two categories.For one part,the informative text adopts the literal translation method to express the information more directly and faithfully.For another,the culture-loaded texts are further divided: for incomprehensible information,domestication strategy is applied and specific techniques are paraphrase,addition,omission,division and shift,aiming to enable readers to understand conveniently and clearly,while for the texts worthy of retaining the characteristics of the original text,the foreignization strategy is adopted and the specific techniques are transliteration,annotation and literal translation,so as to achieve the purpose of cultural dissemination.The author expects that this translation practice can provide English readers with a real Three Gorges,and also try to provide some reference for other translators in the process of studying the Three Gorges,water conservancy and hydropower projects.
