With the development of teaching reform,teacher-student interaction has become a new educational concept in junior high school English teaching,as it can stimulate students‘initiative, prompt them to think about questions in the interaction. In order to improve the effectiveness of interactive teaching in junior high school English classes, the researcher explored teacher-student verbal interaction in the teaching process. With the help of classroom observation, transcription of classroom recordings, corpus analysis, interviews and questionnaires, this research summarizes the discourse modes and teaching strategies of teacher-student verbal interaction in junior high school English classes, and discovers correspondence between them.It is found that there are eight discourse modes of teacher-student verbal interaction in junior high school English classes, four of which are simple discourse modes and others are complex discourse modes.Compared with college English classes, the IR mode and I~nR~n mode, which are simple discourse modes, and the[I~nR~n]FR mode and I[R~nF~n]R mode, which are complex discourse modes, are only found in the junior high school English classes.Besides, teachers tend to use complex discourse modes to improve classroom activity and encourage students to participate more in classroom interaction.Based on classroom observation, interviews and questionnaires,it is also found that, the teaching strategies adopted by teachers in junior high school English classes are mainly divided into questioning strategies and feedback strategies.First, the questioning strategy includes three methods, namely, designing question content, adjusting the difficulty of questions and changing ways of posing questions.Second, feedback strategies include positive feedback strategies and negative feedback strategies. Finally, teaching strategies are more applicable in complex discourse modes.
