Michele Ruggieri,the first missionist of the Society of Jesus who entered and settled the Chinese mainland since Ming Dynasty,quickly acquired the ability of listening,speaking,reading and writing in Chinese in a short time,and even became a Sinologist who is proficient in Chinese classics.As the first missionary to study Chinese in China,Michele Ruggieri’s learning materials,methods and pioneering contributions to learning Chinese language and culture have not been comprehensively and deeply studied.In order to find out the success of his Chinese learning,the author spared no effort to collect and sort out Michele Ruggieri’s many works,including Ch’en-tzu wen,T’ung-su ku-shih,Portuguese-Chinese Vocabulary,Pin ciu’ ven ta’ ssi’ gni’,Shih-yun,Ch’ih-tu chih-nan,Hsin-pien hsi-chu-kuo t’ien-chu shih-lu,etc.Combined with relevant research results at home and abroad,this thesis tries to sort out his process of mastering Chinese listening,speaking,reading and writing from these first-hand and second-hand materials,summarize his methods of learning Chinese,and excavate the values where Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages can learn from.It is hoped that this can provide help for future teaching work,enrich the relevant research on the history of early Chinese communication and teaching,and provide reference for Michele Ruggieri’s research in the future.The thesis is divided into six chapters:The first chapter is the introduction,which mainly introduces the reasons,purposes,significances and innovations of the topic selection,combs the relevant research status at home and abroad,expounds the research methods,introduces his life and Chinese works involved,and explains the learning background.The second chapter analyzes his Chinese phonetic learning.It presents the appearance of Michele Ruggieri’s Chinese phonetic learning from three aspects:reading T’ung-su ku-shih to cultivate language sense,learning Chinese initials and finals,and compiling oral Chinese practice material.Reading stories,combining Chinese and Western phonology knowledge and practical exercise are his main means of practicing Chinese pronunciation.The third chapter analyzes Michele Ruggieri’s Chinese words learning.He comprehensively uses the methods of translation and aggregation,gives full play to the style of reference books such as word lists and dictionaries,and uses synonym or antonym,phonology,style and other links to expand the amount of words.The fourth chapter analyzes Michele Ruggieri’s Chinese written language learning.It discusses the process of his letter writing,literati assisted publication of Chinese works and independent writing.The success of his Chinese written language learning are the imitation of famous sentences,the accumulation of ancient books and culture and the full use of teaching materials.The fifth chapter mainly summarizes Michele Ruggieri’s Chinese learning process and methods.It also expounds the practical significance of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from four aspects: Chinese pronunciation teaching,Chinese vocabulary teaching,Chinese writing teaching and Chinese learning materials.The sixth chapter is the conclusion,which mainly summarizes this thesis,points out the shortcomings of this research and the direction that could be discussed in depth in the future.
