A Report On C-E Translation Of Genuine Southeast Guizhou (Excerpts)

This translation report is based on the Chinese-to-English translation of a folk text entitled Genuine Southeast Guizhou.This book,edited by Fan Yakun,was published in 2016,which hasn’t been translated into the English version so far.Genuine Southeast Guizhou introduces the development and cultures of the Miao and the Dong in southeast Guizhou,boasting rich cultural information.According to Eco-translatology,translation is an adaption and a selection,and translators should transform the source text from the linguistic,the cultural,and the communicative dimensions.Considering there are cultural-loaded words and long sentences in the source text,these features raise translation difficulties.Therefore,these problems are analyzed from lexical,syntactic,and discoursal levels under Ecotranslatology guidance.In the process of translation,many methods and techniques have been adopted in light of the three-dimensional transformation,including transliteration with annotation,free translation,restructuring,conversion,division,amplification,and omission.The conclusion can be drawn from the report: at the lexical level,the translator should thoroughly search the C-E and E-C reference to find the cultural connotations of cultural-loaded words and convey the cultural information precisely to the target readers.Translation methods namely transliteration with annotation and free translation can better help in this regard;at the syntactic and discoursal levels,based on the English-Chinese language differences,the translator should take the readability of the target readers into account to realize communicative intention.Some translation techniques can be employed,namely restructuring,conversion,and amplification in this translation practice.
