The source text of this translation project is selected from the first chapter of The Heir,a novel written by the British writer Vita Sackville-West.The excerpts describe that Chase, the protagonist, suddenly became the heir to a large amount of property after the death of his aunt. When he was at a loss, through the advice of lawyers and other people,he not only had a vision for his future life, but also ushered in some confusion.Through the translation,it is helpful for readers to have a deeper understanding of the novels of Vita Sackville-West and a better understanding of this writer. The descriptions of people, dialogues and scenes can often be seen in this novel. Some contents which contain cultural characteristics are difficult to understand and it is hard to translate.Semantic translation can retain the language features in the novel as much as possible, while communicative translation makes the translation more understandable. Therefore,in order to effectively convey the content of the source text to the target language readers, under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation theory, the translator completed the translation by using translation methods such as amplification, omission, division and so on.The translator also discussed the guiding role of this theory on the novel through case analysis. At the same time, the translator also hoped that this translation practice could provide some experience and reference for relevant text translation. The report consists of five parts. The first part is the introduction, which briefly introduces the background of the translation practice and the significance of the translation task. The second part is the translation process, including three parts which are pre-translation,while translation and proofreading. The third part is the theoretical framework and the theoretical guidance. The fourth part is the case analysis, which analyzes the problems and solutions in translation by listing specific cases. The fifth part is the conclusion, which focuses on the findings, limitations and suggestions.
