| The translation of college English reading textbooks is of significance for improving students’ reading skills and English language ability.The translator participates in a translation project of English textbooks launched by Net Ease Inc,and the third edition of New Horizon College English: Reading and Writing is served as the source text.The report is based on the translation of reading comprehension and word choice passages excerpted from the textbook.The passage-based reading materials contain a wide range of topics,and its language characteristics and writing styles vary.At the lexical level,some technical terms and abbreviations,proper nouns,culture-loaded words and nominalization are pervasive in the source text;At the syntactic level,inanimate subjects,appositive structure,and complex sentences are seen frequently;As regards to the textual level,the source text is coherent and cohesive,and highly readable.To achieve the purpose of helping students to better understand the main idea and the very details of the reading passages so as to respond in a right way to corresponding questions,Skopos Theory is chosen to guide the whole translation process.The first part of the report is about project description,including an overview of the project,features of the source text,readers and functions of the target text.And the second part reviews the whole process of translation.Then,brief introduction of Skopos Theory and its previous application to translation are introduced to demonstrate its feasibility to guide this translation task.Finally,the report gives some typical cases in the aspects of lexicon,syntax and text,and then analyzes under the guidance of three rules of Skopos Theory how to adopt relative translation approaches to solve translation difficulties and fulfill the requirements of the translation project to the greatest extent.Furthermore,the report aims to provide a reference for further translation of English reading textbooks. |
