The translation practice chose Chapter One to Five of Return to Dragon Mountain as the English-Chinese material which belongs to a kind of biography. As one of the distinguished disciplines among contemporary literature study, biography is a combination of history and literature. In consequence, the translation of biography is required to pay attention to both historicity and literariness.Return to Dragon Mountain is a non-fiction biography written by an American sinologist Jonathan Spence. This book gives us a view of life style, customs and the social history evolution of Late Ming dynasty by the description of the symbol landlord Zhang Dai and his family which is valuable for the study of Chinese history. As Jonathan is paying attention to literary modification in the book, the writer met such difficultiesthat convey the effect of original language equivalently to the target reader and make them resonate. In the reference of previous theory and experiences in the biography translation, the writer finally overcome the difficulties and complete the translation task.During the translation process, the writer analyze the book in the guidance of three rules of Skopos, combined with the translation work of Chapter one to five. The writer choose concrete strategies and methods and give us examples. As the study of biography translation which is guided by Skopos Theory is not so popular at home, the writer want to try this proposition and give some advice for the following translation learners. In keeping with the standards of biography translation, the three rules of Skopos Theory, namely Skopos rule, fidelity and coherence rulecan successfully convey the historicity and literariness of biography and can be used as useful translation strategies for biography translation. This thesis illustrates the application of Skopos theory in this article from the respects of lexical and syntactic levels. In terms of lexicon level, the translation methods of word naturalized, conversion, amplification and omission are used;for the syntactic level, the thesis used linear translation, domestication in sentence patterns, comination and sentencence reconstruction, hoping to afford some useful suggestions for biography translation.
