Study On The Translation Of Hedging Devices In English Technical Text

Nowadays,the globally exchange of information is becoming more and more convenient than that in the past.With more scholars and scientists grasping the world’s advanced technologies by reading foreign technical texts extensively,the translation of scientific and technological texts has attracted wide attention.In order to be more precise and objective,writers of such texts tend to use different means of expression,among which hedging devices are widely used for their function of reducing the absoluteness through less absolute expression,so as to improve the objectivity and the accuracy of the text.Therefore,when translating scientific and technological texts,how to translate hedging devices properly is very crucial.This report takes Chapter 10 and Chapter 11 of Submarine Design and Development as the object,investigates hedging devices in the two chapters and explores the English-Chinese translation process and methods(i.e.,literal translation,amplification,free translation and extension)of hedging devices in technical texts by analyzing the translation of specific examples,which hopefully can provide meaningful guidance and reference for future hedging devices translating in technical texts.
