A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of Toward Rural Revitalization(Excerpts)

After several years of arduous struggle,China has decisively won the anti-poverty battle on the way to achieving the first 100-year goal,which has created a major achievement in fighting poverty in the world today.Given this major background,the book Toward Rural Revitalization,written by contemporary literary writer and renowned scholar Wang Hongjia,is a work of reportage reflecting and watching reality.The work which focuses on the national battlefield of poverty eradication is about the Chinese people who have been combating poverty and moving towards rural revitalization for eight years under the strong leadership of the CPC since 2012.The original text is a book full of facts about China’s struggle to lift itself out of poverty that will be educational and inspiring to countries abroad that also have similar conditions.Aiming to fulfill the expected goal of “telling the story of poverty eradication in China”,the author targets the audience who are interested in the PRC and are keen to learn about its approach to poverty alleviation.When translating,the author finds that it is quite crucial for the readers to be attracted by plenty of novel and abundant content,and the translation must be highly readable and comprehensible.Therefore,this report is based on the reception aesthetics theory of Jauss and Iser,which lays the reader in an important role and mainly settles the blank spot of the text as well as the expectation horizon of the target readers,so as to better comply with the aesthetics of the target readers.This report is composed of five chapters.The first chapter is the overview of the background of the translation project,the analysis of the source text,and the introduction of the significance of this translation project.The second chapter is a more detailed description of the translation process.The third chapter is an overview of reception aesthetic theory and a detailed analysis of textual blanks and readers’ horizons of expectation in reception aesthetics.The fourth chapter is under the guidance of reception aesthetics theory to analyze the translation of blank spots in the source text and how to satisfy the target readers’ expectation horizon at two levels: word and sentence.In the fifth chapter,the lessons gained from this translation practice are summarized.
