| This thesis is a practice report based on the C-E translation of tourism texts. The translated material is excerpted from Xitang—A Vibrant Age-old Town, which is a comprehensive and complete tourism publicity material that introduces the culture and tourism of Xitang in terms of tangible cultural heritage, intangible cultural heritage, and market influence.China’s tourism industry is currently developing rapidly while most attractions lack appropriate English introductions and public signs.Although the research in the field of tourism translation has increased in domestic academics with abundant research results, those themed on ancient towns are yet few.The translator selected the tourism publicity materials of Xitang Ancient Town as translation practice materials, aiming to explore the translation difficulties of tourism texts and their coping strategies, and to introduce the local cultural characteristics of Xitang Ancient Town to foreign tourists with a faithful and smooth translation. The original text contains many four-character structures,culture-loaded words,run-on sentences and subjectless sentences.Taking into account the linguistic differences between Chinese and English, the translator adopted omission and restructuring to translate four-character structures.Transliteration plus annotation and liberal translation were used for the translation of culture-loaded words. As for run-on sentences, division and combination were employed.Subjectless sentences were translated by adding appropriate subjects and using passive voice. In this practice report, problems and coping strategies of tourism translation are analyzed, which has not only made a contribution to the tourism development of Xitang Ancient Town, but also provided a reference for the translation of tourism texts of the same type. |
