A Report On The Simulated Consecutive Interpreting Of The Interview With Sundar Pichai,Google’s CEO

Interpreting is not only an activity that requires interpreters to transform from one language to another language but also a kind of service,so the importance of interpreting quality is self-evident.Fluency in the delivery of the target language is one of the essential factors to evaluate the quality of interpreting.In consecutive interpreting,the delivery of the meaning of source language would be affected if interpreters stumble or many disfluencies occur,which would lead to a decrease in the audience’s trust and also the interpreters’ confidence.In the simulated interpreting practice of Cable News Network’s interview with Sundar Pichai,the CEO of Google,disfluencies occur in the delivery process of the target language,which has affected the quality of interpreting.Therefore,the author aims to analyze the causes and coping strategies of the disfluency of the simulated interpreting in this report.Firstly,the author gives a task description of the simulated interpreting practice.It includes task background introduction,pre-task preparation and interpreting process.In task background introduction,the author briefly introduces the background of the CNN ’s interview,characteristics and difficulties of interview interpreting.In pre-task preparation,the author introduces preparation for background information and terms,and explains the guiding significance of the Interpretive Theory in analyzing how to improve the fluency in the delivery process.Then based on previous studies combined with the simulated interpreting practice,the author defines disfluency which mainly includes three categories—pause(silent pause and filled pause),self-repair and repetition.Based on the analysis of specific cases,the causes of disfluency are summarized as follows —disfluency caused by improper organization of the target language;disfluency due to insufficient background information;disfluency due to terms and vocabularies.The author puts forward corresponding strategies for each of these causes.As for disfluency caused by improper organization of the target language,interpreters can adopt the strategies of reorganizing vague logic of the source language and syntactic linearity;as for disfluency caused by insufficient background information,fuzzy expression and appropriate omission can be used;as for disfluency due to terms and vocabularies,replacing concrete words with abstract words,determining the meaning of words in specific context and paraphrasing can be adopted.Finally,the author summarizes case analysis results,points out the shortcomings of the report,and hopes to provide reference and suggestions for interpreters to produce target language fluently in the future as well as make contribution to the research of related interpreting strategies.
