This thesis, based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis, explores the differences between the translated and original English of petroleum science and technology from the aspect of lexical collocation, analyzes the effect of the source language on the translated English and proposes some implications for the translation activities. The research findings are as follows:(1)most semi-technical words collocate with technical or other semi-technical words that contain conceptual meanings, whereas the semi-technical words in the original English mainly collocate with common words with less conceptual meanings, which reflects a simplification in the collocation type;(2)“...of the”,as a collocation framework of functional words, occupies a large proportion in the translated English, which is far higher than that in the original English;(3)functional words in the translated English collocate with nouns that are related to processes and motions. However, functional words in the original English collocate with nouns that are related to time and space;(4)the above situations are mainly impacted by the shining-through effect that causes the differences in lexical collocations in the translated English and original English. The thesis suggests that translators deduce the meaning of semi-technical words by their collocates and avoid repeating the same functional words according to their connotations and substitutable expressions in Chinese to reduce the shining-through effect.Based on previous research, this thesis further testifies the shining-through effect on the translated English, and contributes to improving translators’ understanding of shining-through effect to reduce the impact of the shining-through.The implications proposed in this thesis intend to improve translators’ ability in translating the petroleum science and technology text.
