| This translation report is excerpted from a memoir written by an African-American actress. The story unfolds with the author’s growth experience as a black girl who suffered a lot from racial discrimination.Compared with other literary works, this book is more delicate and passionate, and therefore easier to arouse people’s resonance. For those suffering from psychological trauma and unable to reconcile, this book provides some spiritual consolation. The first three chapters of the memoir were chosen as the translation material for the translation practice, and Professor Hu Gengshen’s eco-translatology theory was selected as the theoretical guidance.Under the guidance,a careful textual analysis was conducted from three dimensions, namely, the linguistic dimension, the cultural dimension, and the communicative dimension, and a "multi-dimensional transformation" method was tried adopting in order to achieve "the ecological balance" between the source language and target language. To be more specific, the following transformational strategies were employed in the translation practice:1)In the linguistic dimension,part-of-speech conversion, sentence division, and sentence reorganization are the major transformational strategies used to convey the semantic meaning;2)In the cultural dimension, annotation, domestication, and four-character phrases are the major transformational strategies used to fill the cultural vacancy or to avoid translationese;and 3)In the communicative dimension, such devices as discourse cohesion and logical conversion prove to be effective in realizing the author’s communicative intention. This report consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background, the author’s works, and the significance of translation;the second chapter mainly elaborates on the eco-translatology theory and the three-dimensional transformations;the third chapter introduces the process of translation;the fourth chapter is the case analysis, demonstrating with concrete examples the application of the theory to the translation practice;the fifth chapter concludes with the summary of the major findings and limitations of this translation report.Through the translation practice, the eco-translatology theory is proved to be of guiding significance to the translation of memoirs. It is hoped that the findings of this report can make some contributions to the future research in related fields. |
