| These days, with the rapid development of science and technology and the deepening of economic globalization,sci-tech news has become increasingly important.High-quality sci-tech news translation can not only help timely spread science and technology information, promote scientific and technological exchanges, but also allow the public to have an insightful understanding of science and technology. This translation report is based on the author’s translation practice, guided by functionalist translation theory.Functionalist translation theory emphasizes that translation is a purposeful communicative activity and the choice of methods and strategies in the process of translation should be determined by the purpose and intended function of the target text.According to the purpose and intended function of this translation practice, the author mainly uses three principles, namely, skopos principle, coherence principle and loyalty principle after reviewing the representative theories of the main figures of functionalism. The report is divided into five chapters. It states the definition, linguistic features and previous study on translation of sci-tech news, and introduces the development, framework and application of functionalist translation theory to sci-tech news.It also summarizes translation techniques used for translating long sentences, passive sentences, and nominal structure in sci-tech news.Three main conclusions are to be drawn from the translation practice. At the syntactic level, sentence structure and internal logic should be clarified before translation, and linear translation, splitting and restructuring would work while translating long sentences.English passive sentences can be translated into Chinese passive sentences,Chinese active sentences or Chinese non-subject sentences. At the lexical level, the differences between Chinese and English should be taken into full consideration.Shift, addition, and literal translation can be adopted to change the static, abstract nominal structures in English to the dynamic, concrete expressions in Chinese. |
