Civil society,an important category in Marxist theory, has been widely studied in academic circles, and the German Ideology,an important part of the development of civil society theory in Marxist philosophy, has not received the same degree of attention.17 th century contractarian thinkers, inheriting ideas from Aristotle’s classical world to the modern school of natural law,saw civil society as "community of states".Hegel divided civil society and the state into two separate spheres, thus breaking the previous situation of civil society being integrated into the state.Marx inherited Hegel’s findings, and his theory of civil society received a new sublimation in The German Ideology after going through the period of the early Rheinische Zeitung, the period of Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Law,and the period of The Outline on Feuerbach. It constructs a theory of civil society with the core logic of realistic forms of economic interaction between people, further expanding and deepening the conceptual boundaries and theoretical depth of civil society. This article discusses the significance of the theory of civil society in the German Ideology to the formation and development of Marxist philosophy by analysing the theoretical origins, connotations and constituent elements of the idea of civil society in the German Ideology.Firstly, the constituent elements of the theory of civil society all have political economy implications, which is actually a deepening of the concept of economic foundation.Secondly,Marx took "real people" as the new footing of the theory of civil society, which supported the formation of the materialistic view of history.Thirdly,Marx pointed out that productivity as a constant source of development leads to the inevitable development of civil society until the present forms of interaction cannot be adapted to the current social form. Finally, the study of civil society theory in The German Ideology is not only an important guide to the construction of a harmonious society, but is also important for analysing the development and changes of contemporary Chinese society.
