Zhou Ting Zen Master was a well-known monk in the early Qing Dynasty in Jiangsu and Zhejiang.At present,academics have mostly focused on his Buddhist achievements,such as the Buddhist chronicles,and have often neglected the study of his poetic compositions.To gain a complete understanding of this poetic monk of the early Qing Dynasty,it is not enough to focus only on his Buddhist achievements.A large number of Zen Master Zhouting’s poems,influenced by his personal experience,ideological characteristics,social environment and friendships show the unique dual characteristics of regional culture and monastic poetry and literature.Zhou Ting Zen Master lived in the Shunzhi and Kangxi dynasties in the early Qing Dynasty.According to the available historical materials,he had a family origin of poetry and books,but his parents passed away,his family suffered an unfortunate encounter,and he was displaced and became a monk.His choice of Buddhism and his poetry and friendships influenced his poetic style.Although he was a Buddhist,he still had an eclectic approach to Confucianism and Taoism.During his life,Zen Master Zhou Ting was mainly active in Jiangsu and Zhejiang,and his circle of friendships expanded outward,centering on Ma Zhou Ting(present-day Wuxi Masan).In addition to interacting with monks from famous temples of the time,he also made friends with a wide range of people within the party,including eminent officials of the Qing court and literary scholars,and met friends with poetry and sang in societies.Zen Master Zhou Ting had a complex relationship with the Kangxi Emperor,and his experience is typical of the complex mentality of the scholars during the Kangxi Dynasty.The background of Zen Master Zhou Ting’s poetry comes from the dual development of poetry and Buddhism in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.The poetics of the early Qing Dynasty was based on reflection and criticism of Ming poetry,and the poetic scene showed the co-emergence of multiple poetic concepts.During the Kangxi dynasty,the Kangxi emperor advocated an elegant and mellow style of poetry,and influenced the orientation of tang in the poetry world at that time.The development of poetry and Buddhism also went hand in hand,and the various schools of Buddhism in the Ming and Qing dynasties,by tracing their origins,intended to merge in order to stop fighting.The gradual flourishing of Buddhism and poetics in the early Qing Dynasty also provided a stable environment for poetry and Zen.His poetry is distinctly Tang poetry,which is both playful and intended to broaden the poetic realm and enrich the poetic content.Zen Master Zhou Ting’s poetry has a wide range of subject matter.There are poems on objects,which reflect the fun nature of his poetry;there are poems on historical events,which draw lessons from historical figures and relate the death of a woman to the death of a gentleman,expressing both the desire for a hermit and the praise of righteousness;there are poems on disasters,which express sympathy for the people and lament for their livelihood through the description of natural disasters;and there are also poems on the daily life of monks,especially those that continue the tradition of There are also poems on disasters that express sympathy for the people and lament for their livelihood through depictions of natural disasters,and poems on the daily lives of monks,especially Zen poems that continue the tradition of Chinese Buddhism that places equal emphasis on agriculture and meditation,with many works of cultivation.In terms of content,Zen Master Zhou Ting ’s poems are mostly based on the mind as a testament to the Way,and in terms of language,they are simple and concise,incorporating poetic feelings,reflecting the integration of Zen and poetry in three aspects:Zen language,Zen theory,and Zen interest.He also appreciates the different styles of poetry,such as court poetry and "ghost poetry".He has an admiration for Tao,and particularly appreciates the meaning of cultivation and the true and open-minded attitude of Tao’s poetry.Zen Master Zhou ting valued the poetry’s deep and profound emotions,which were based on emotions and events.He also inherited the poetic style of some poets and monks of the Tang Dynasty and drew from their poetry in terms of imagery,realm,and content,abandoning their deliberate bitterness and obscure language and striving to create poems with a sad and melancholic style.
