Teaching materials are the basis for teaching and learning,and both teachers’ teaching effectiveness and students’ learning effectiveness will be affected by the quality of teaching materials.The success of teaching materials is closely related to the appropriateness of topic selection.Topics are an important part of teaching materials,and the knowledge and language points of teaching materials need to be presented through topics.The content of topics that are interesting to students and the reasonable arrangement of topics can help students acquire knowledge better.The study found that the topics in the New Practical Chinese Textbook emphasize the principle of "practicality" and focus on students’ life and learning.The first four books of the textbook focus on teaching basic functions and developing students’ ability to use these functions to communicate.Meanwhile,since the New Practical Chinese Textbook has been published in its third edition,but only two volumes have been published so far,a brief analysis of the topic content and functions of the third edition,books one and two,is conducted.It is found that the third edition presents new features of more focused topic content and more practical topic functions.The textbook has a large number of life topics in the primary stage,and puts the topics that students need to master as soon as possible in the front,in line with the principle of urgent learning first.As learners’ language level improves,the topics of perception are gradually added,so that learners can discuss common phenomena in social life and gradually develop the ability of expression by expressing their own feelings and opinions about them.Generally speaking,the distribution of the materials reflects the characteristics of gradual progress.Most of the topics are presented in the form of dialogues,and the number of dialogical texts decreases and the number of narrative texts increases in Books 1 to 4.In terms of the arrangement of topics,books 1 and 2 conform to the "spiral" arrangement,which can help students deepen their memory in the cycle.In addition,we also found that some of the topics in the textbook are not well presented.As society is constantly changing,primary comprehensive textbooks need to be current and include topics that meet the interests of students and the needs of modern life.Writers should be aware of and sensitive to cross-cultural communication when choosing topics and select content that is close to real life or about the differences between China and foreign countries to naturally show the uniqueness of Chinese culture and promote students’understanding of Chinese culture.Questionnaires or interviews should be conducted before the development of the primary comprehensive textbook so that the textbook can be adapted to the needs of different target groups as much as possible.Topic content should follow a spiral of reproduction so that its associated verbal knowledge and skills can be effectively reproduced in the materials.Teachers should be flexible in their approach to the content of the topics and adopt a variety of teaching methods to stimulate students’ interest in learning the topics of the primary comprehensive materials.
