The COVID-19 has brought about tremendous changes in people’s lives.Meanwhile, video conferencing has become the latest and most widespread means of international communication and medical cooperation. In this sense, the interpreter has become the co-builder of a harmonious doctor-patient relationship, and a common disseminator of the Chinese experience. While the international community’s demand for remote interpreting has increased,it has also brought new challenges for both the interpreters and the research community.Information transmission in interpretation scenarios is presented not only by verbal modes but also by non-verbal modes such as images, sounds, facial expressions, gestures, and slides. This study focuses on three issues:How is the Synthetic Theoretical Framework for Multimodal Discourse Analysis introduced by Zhang Delu applicable to remote interpreting context? What are the signs for interpreters to adapt to multimodal texts during remote interpreting? What advice can interpreters take from the multimodal perspective of remote interpreting to improve performances?Based on the multimodal discourse analytical framework constructed by Zhang Delu, this study tend to look into the media systems presented in remote meetings, and how they work together to convey the discourse meanings.By analyzing the cases of remote meetings on an international medical platform, this study points out that the slides, the speaker’s language, the speed, and the intonation of the presentation are all manifestations of multi-modes in remote interpreting.Interpreters need to integrate and process the information of various modes, have a sufficient understanding of the meeting content and the professional knowledge involved, and adopt strategies such as supplementing and simplification.During this process, interpreters need to take full advantage of all the modes involved in remote meetings, sort out the multimodal information in the source language, and use it as the basis when forming the language to deliver the translated text with higher quality.
