A Translation Report On Ethnography Of Guzhang County (Excerpt)

In recent years,as the promotion of “the Belt and Road Initiative” and the arising of “cultural confidence”,the demand for publicity of Chinese folk culture has been growing.As an essential part of Chinese folk culture,the translation of Tujia culture is not only for the external publicity of splendid Chinese folk culture,but also a window for “Telling Chinese Stories”.Guzhang County,administrated by Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture,located in the west of Hunan Province and central of Xiangxi prefecture,is a place with a population of 142,900(2020),among which 87% are ethnic minorities.Due to the massive habitat of these minorities,many splendid ethnic cultures and customs have been perfectly preserved in Guzhang,some of which have been enrolled into provincial or even national intangible cultural heritages.Ethnography of Guzhang County is the first book that particularly aims to introduce the customs of Tujia people in Guzhang county,which includes Tujia’s history,language,architecture,marriage and so on.All these contents make it a perfect material for those who want to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the folk culture of Tujia.The translation is done by the author,and has been amended and proofread,which guarantees its operativity.Based on functional equivalence theory,this report puts emphasis on the discussion of the translation strategy adopted while translating texts of Chinses folk culture.In this report,the discussion unfolds in both lexical level and syntactic level.Lexically,cases such as translation of culture-loaded words,ancient Chinese words and dialectical words,are dealt with in this report.Syntactically,this article mainly explores how to translate different types of sentences and the precise strategy the translator should adopt while using adaptation.The main goal of this report is to discuss the precise strategy and methods while translating texts of ethic folk culture,and finally to contribute to the publicity of Chinese ethnic minority culture.
