| The translation material of this Chinese-English translation report is excerpted from the book Cultural Interaction and Integration Between Ancient Ba-Shu and South Asia, whose author is Tang Hong, the executive deputy director of the Center for Ba-Shu Culture Studies,Sichuan Normal University. This book mainly discusses the cultural exchange between ancient Ba-Shu and South Asia from three aspects: material culture, religious culture and language and art culture, and comprehensively analyzes the close relationship that existed between them. The translator is mainly responsible for translating the third section of the book’s introduction and the first three sections of the first part, specifically pages 16 to 27 of the book, which focuses on the etymology of Cina in various periods.Analyzed from the perspective of text type, the source text belongs to informative text. The key to translating this type of practical text is to accurately convey the information of the original text. Therefore, the translator chooses the three principles of translation propounded by the famous British translator Tytler to guide this translation practice. His translation principles require not only that the target text shall completely reproduce the original ideas and content and maintain the writing style of the original text, but also that the translation should be natural and fluent. In the process of translation,in order to maintain consistency with the source text in the above three aspects, the translator exploits translation techniques such as amplification, paraphrase, omission, division, combination, and so on to solve the difficulties encountered. These are intended to achieve the greatest possible approximation to the writing style and expression of the source text while remaining faithful to it.In this translation practice, the translator had a lot of gains and insights by solving a series of difficulties encountered in the translation process. She realized that only a deep understanding of the original work and a good command of the target language can deliver excellent translation works. In addition, the translator also gained a deeper understanding of Tytler’s three principles of translation. |
