| In the 1990s,the socialist market economy reform was launched in full swing, and people could feel that society had undergone great changes, both spiritually and in their daily lives. In the face of this complicated reality, literature expressed reality in its own unique way and became a part of this reality.Zhang Xin’s novels observe the social reality since the 1990 s from a novel and unique perspective, focusing on the many facets of the newly emerged middle-class group. The Marxist literary theorist Jameson once pointed out that the form of a work of art is itself an occasion for us to observe and reflect on social conditions and social forms, and that the exploration of the form of a work is the way and method by which we observe the interaction between a text and society. Therefore,in categorizing Zhang Xin’s works into the vision of middle-class writing, this paper uses the narrative form of the works as an entry point to analyze Zhang Xin’s capture of the newly emerged historical experiences, social changes and class changes after the reform and opening up,and to explore the influence of the middle-class group in Zhang Xin’s novels on social values and the sowing of consumer culture.Based on an in-depth study of Zhang Xin’s novels, this paper examines the interaction between literature and the times by exploring the characteristics and significance of middle-class writing from point to point in the context of middle-class writing in recent years. The dissertation is divided into three parts: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion,as follows:Introductory section: It introduces the origin and significance of the selected topic, the review of the current research situation, the definition of relevant concepts, and the conception of research ideas, methods and innovation points. The main part: Focusing on the text of Zhang Xin’s novel,we follow the research path from form to content to explore the narrative structure and content of Zhang Xin’s text in capturing class changes and new historical experiences. On this basis,Zhang Xin’s novels are used as a starting point to study the characteristics and significance of middle-class writing from point to point. In the first chapter,Zhang Xin’s novels are studied mainly in terms of form and explore how new historical experiences enter the text and are rationalized. The dynamics and patterns of plot development in his novels are examined in terms of narrative function.Behind this impetus and pattern is a deep structure rooted within the text, and the deep structure of the work is constructed in the same way as social change and life changes. The narrative mode of his works incorporates new historical experiences, making the symbolic system of the text characterized by complexity and multiplicity of meanings. In the second chapter, this new historical experience is a complex mirror image of the intertwined logic of consumption and the middle class. The spread of consumer culture and the rise of a new middle class are intertwined and interact with each other, with consumer culture shaping the external image of the middle class and the continuous expansion of the middle class causing the spread of consumer culture.Zhang Xin’s work presents the plight of people in the consumerist culture and the impact of the rise of the middle class on the values of the whole society. The third chapter is devoted to sorting out several representative middle-class novels since Zhang Xin’s work. The writing characteristics of Zhang Xin’s novels, together with the recent middle-class novels, constitute the emerging and developing middle-class writing, thus analyzing the narrative characteristics and significance of the emerging middle-class writing. Conclusion: This section is a summary of Zhang Xin’s novels and middle-class writing.Through examining and observing the literary phenomenon of middle-class writing, the "spatiotemporal" characteristics and consumerism characteristics of middle-class writing are discovered. |
