Reading plays an important role in improving students' English proficiency and promoting their overall development.Due to the limited teaching time in the reading class, extracurricular reading in language learning highlights its importance and necessity. The junior middle school stage is a turning point in student learning and development. At the same time, the Compulsory English Curriculum Standards clearly requires teachers to formulate students' learning strategies in a targeted manner and guide them to effectively use learning strategies. Therefore, the situation of extracurricular reading in junior middle school and the application of autonomous learning strategies in junior middle school students' English extracurricular reading are both worthy of further discussion.Based on the theoretical basis of autonomous learning theory, constructivism theory and Krashen's language input hypothesis, the English autonomous learning model(cognitive strategy, metacognitive strategy, social strategy, emotional strategy)is applied to enhance the effectiveness of English extracurricular reading in junior middle school. It is intended to solve the following problems:(1)What are the current status and problems of English extracurricular reading in junior middle school?(2)Can the autonomous learning strategies used in this study enhance the effectiveness of English extracurricular reading in junior middle school? This study firstly conducted an investigation into the current situation of English extracurricular reading through questionnaires for 336 students and 4 teachers in the first grade of Li Duanfen Middle School in Guiyang, the author's internship school. The status quo and problems of English extracurricular reading are then discussed. At the same time, the author attends the English classes of Class 1 and 7 from September 3,2018 to January 12,2019,when Class 1 used extracurricular reading books. The autonomous learning strategy teaching mode was further used during the winter vacation period(January 13,2019,February 25,2019).The author conducts extracurricular reading experiment for Class 1 by QQ platform. The results of two classes' English reading test in the final exam(pre-test in January)and in the opening exam(post-test in February)are recorded. The author compares the English scores of Class 1 and 7 for two times, and analyzes the effectiveness of improving the English extracurricular reading. The study found that:(1)the current situation of English extracurricular reading is not optimistic.Although students can agree with the positive effect of English extracurricular reading on improving English proficiency, extracurricular reading generally has problems of utilitarian reading, less reading time, single reading materials, lack of reading strategies, poor reading habits, lack of planning and reflection.(2)Although the attitude of teachers to extracurricular reading is positive, due to the pressure of teaching and the lack of experience in guiding extracurricular reading, the guidance for students is mainly to recommend extracurricular reading materials.(3)The application of autonomous learning strategy mode(cognitive strategy, metacognitive strategy, social strategy, emotional strategy)helps to improve students' English reading scores and it proves the use of autonomous learning strategies enhances the effectiveness of English extracurricular reading. This study can provide reference for English teachers in the surveyed schools to improve students' English reading ability, and it can be used as reference for future autonomous English reading. Finally,it is shown that the effective strategies for students to learn English are very important to improve their English ability in the teaching process. There are still some shortcomings in this study: the representativeness of the research object is not comprehensive enough, the research time is not enough, and the learning strategy method is also relatively simple, which leads to the bias and validity of the research results.
