With the increasingly frequent exchanges between China and the West in the medical field, the market demand for medical translation has gradually increased, and more and more translators have begun to engage in medical text translation. In June2021,the author was commissioned to carry out the E-C translation task of the ISBI Practice Guidelines for Burn Care,Part 2(hereinafter referred to as PGs).Based on this task, this practice report selects the “Introduction” and “First Aid” parts of the PGs as the object of case analysis to comprehensively reflect on the translation process, discuss translation problems and summarize translation experience. The translator chooses the “function plus loyalty” theory of Christiane Nord,a master of the German functional translation school,as a guide to clarify the translation brief, analyze features of the original text and find solutions to translation problems utilizing the equifunctional instrumental translation strategy. After sorting out the translation problems encountered in translating this medical text, the translator discovers that the problems mainly include the translation of polysemes, long sentences, and textual coherence. The selected translation strategy focuses on the functional units of the source text and aims to achieve ST functions for target audiences. For this translation task, the function of the source text contains sub-functions of referential function: informative function and directive function. In studying solutions to those translation problems, the translator uses the function plus loyalty theory, focusing on realization the informative and directive functions of the source text and being loyal to the source-text sender, the target-text addressees and the initiator,to explore appropriate translation methods. As for the translation of polysemes, two methods, the diction method which refers to the translation of a word can be selected through word collocation or context, and the extension method which refers to the translation of a word can be found through abstraction, concretization, expansion or narrowing its basic meaning, are available. As for the translation of long sentences, there are four methods including splitting, translation in original order, translation in reverse order and recasting to apply to achieve smooth expression. As for the translation of textual coherence, the readable translation can be achieved by understanding the original textual progressing and then constructing a coherent translation,or by coherence complement which means the translation can be appropriately supplemented from the perspective of the target readers to realize the coherence of the translation.Under the guidance of the “function plus loyalty” theory, this report addresses the main problems encountered in the translation of the medical text and draws specific conclusions. It can be added to the field of medical text translation, contributing to the current research and providing some experience and reference for future translation practice.
