Under the influence of Lu Xun,Xu Qinwen embarked on the road of creation of local literature and was well known as a writer of local literature. In fact,Xu Qinwen’s creative themes are diverse, including local novels, marriage novels, and anti-Japanese war novels. He uses his own personal experience as the theme of his creation, truly presenting the hardships and difficulties of the people at the bottom and intellectuals, and "distress" is an important theme of his novels. This paper attempts to take Xu Qinwen’s novels before 1949 as the research object, analyze the form of bitterness, the spiritual orientation of the theme of distress and its artistic presentation in Xu Qinwen’s novels, and further explore the causes of his distressed writing. The main body of the paper consists of four chapters:The first chapter focuses on the bitter patterns in Xu Qinwen’s novels from 1922 to 1949.The distress in Xu Qinwen’s novels can be divided into three categories: the bitterness of material embarrassment, the bitterness of marriage, and the fear of life caused by the turbulent society. The second chapter mainly analyzes the spiritual direction of Xu Qinwen’s bitter writing.Behind Xu Qinwen’s bitter writing is a concern for society,a critique of feudal culture, and an examination of human nature. The social and political turmoil and the depression of the rural economy have made it difficult for the people to survive, which in turn has led to mental depression. In addition, the deep-rooted feudal culture restricts the behavior of the people, imprisons the people’s minds, and distorts the souls of the people. Finally,Xu Qinwen questioned and reflected on human nature, revealing that people’s distress is related to indifferent interpersonal relationships and people’s indulgence. The third chapter focuses on the artistic presentation of the bitter theme of Xu Qinwen’s novel.Xu Qinwen often uses refinement, exaggeration and anti-language methods for satirization, and his novel is juxtaposed with irony and absurdity, exposing the absurdity of real life in irony and criticizing in absurdity. In addition,he often shows the conscious activities of characters through inner monologues and free associations, showing the bitterness buried deep in the subconscious. Finally,he writes bitterness from a multi-narrative perspective, and the inner distress of the characters can be vividly reflected.Chapter 4 focuses on the causes of Xu Qinwen’s bitter writing. The bitter writing of Xu Qinwen’s novels first stems from his bumpy experience, and he uses literary creation to vent all kinds of bitter emotions in his heart. In addition,Xu Qinwen’s bitter writing was deeply influenced by Lu Xun and the May Fourth era,and under its influence formed his own unique literary outlook.
