On Translation Strategies Of English Terms In Scientific And Technological Texts

The study of terminology translation is a continuous and gradual process.The history of the study of terminology can date from the Qing Dynasty.A large number of standardized terms have emerged in the naming process of scientific and technological terms.Many scholars have their own unique views on the standards,principles and methods of terminology translation.However,there is not yet a perfect terminology translation system,and the theories and methods of terminology translation need to be improved.A large number of nuclear terms have appeared in this practice project,so the author focuses on the translation of terms.The mian goal of this thesis is to summarize the principles and methods of terminology translation in scientific and technological texts.The project is called Advisory material for the IAEA regulations for the safe transport of radioactive material(2012 Edition),which is entrusted by School of National Defense and Nuclear Science and Technology to the College of International Studies for the practice of MTI students in September 2020.The total number of the excerpts is 15143 words.It has taken two months to complete the translation at the end of November.In the report,the author introduces the translation project,including background,requirements and expected effects.All work done by the author at the process of pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation has been described.According to the author’s searching,there is no translation theory exclusively for terminology,so the author chooses the well-known Newmark’s translation theory as the guidance for this term translation.In order to translate terms well,it is necessary to master the characteristics of terms and based on certain translation principles and methods.Based on Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation,the author concludes the principles of terms translation,named as “faithfulness” and “smoothness”.Considering the translated names need to be unified in the text(the translation should be consistent),the author has also mentioned “unity” principle.In real practice,the existence of a large number of standardization terms means that translators do not need to translate by themselves,but only needs to consult materials and dictionaries,ensuring the translation having traces to follow,making the translation standard.However,it is essential to analyze translation methods used in standardization terms.The lessons learned from the past help future generations to make their translation more perfect.Terms and vocabulary other than standardization terms,the author calls them non standardization terms.Such terms need to be translated by translators themselves.Generally,the methods for terms translation include but not limited to transliteration,pictographic translation,conversion,coinage etc.And five methods have been used in this translation,including corresponding translation,amplification,omission,inversion and free translation.This report has also mentioned the translation of abbreviated terms and polysemous terms.Zero translation is adopted for abbreviated terms.The translation of polysemous terms is on the basis of the text and context.Through the study of terminology translation in this thesis,the author finds that the translation of terms is different from the translation of sentences,paragraphs and texts.Translator should not only have a sense of standardization,but also use terminology translation methods based on certain principles.The author hopes to make a small contribution to the study of terminology translation through this thesis.
