Translation Shifts In The Maritime Text

The purpose of the report is to explore the phenomenon of translation shifts in the E-C translation practice of maritime text.The report is based on an edited book Management of Protected Areas: A Network Perspective,a collection of scholarly articles,edited by Paul D.Goriup,Chairman of the Nature Conservancy,Newbury,UK.The translated text of the report is excerpted from the first two chapters of the book,From Marine Protected Areas to MPA Networks and Ecological Effects and Benefits of Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas: Management Implications,respectively,which fall into the maritime genre,whose texts feature complicated sentence structure,logical statement,long and difficult sentences,noun structures,passive voice,and grammatical structures that differ greatly from Chinese.Through translation practice,the author finds that Catford’s Theory of Translation Shifts has important guiding significance for the maritime texts.Therefore,by applying the two major types of translation shifts,namely level shifts and category shifts,the author was able to solve the shifts problems at the lexical and sentence structure levels in the text respectively,thereby making the translation authentic and smooth.It is hoped that the report will provide some reference for the translation of the maritime texts of the same type.
