A Practice Report On C-E Translation Of Sci-Tech Texts Under The Guidance Of Translation Shifts Theory

Today’s world has entered the era of science and technology.Mutual investment between countries is increasing,and the translation of scientific and technological texts is also booming.The source text selected in this article is "Operation Instructions for ETCS-1 Onboard ATP System".This translation and research can not only promote the needs of scientific research and the commercial cooperation between Chinese and foreign science and technology industries,but also facilitate the learning and communication of domestic and foreign on-board ATP system product installers,maintenance personnel and train drivers.In the translation process,combined with the characteristics of scientific and technological English,the translator chose the "translation shift" of the British linguist John Catford as the theoretical guide for the translation of the on-board scientific and technological texts.Translation shifts theory contains two aspects,level shifts and category shifts,which offer a powerful theoretical foundation for the specific translation practice of vehicle-mounted text materials.In Chapter 4,this reporter will combine specific cases to analyze the C-E translation of sci-tech texts under the guidance of translation shifts theory,in order to provide some references for science and technology translators.After the translation shifts theory for the translation of this vehicle-mounted science and technology text,the translation shifts between the vocabulary and the grammatical level is realized under the level shifts;under the guidance of category shift,namely the shifts between negative sentences and positive sentences,prepositive attributive and postpositive attributive,active sentences and passive sentences and parts of speech,etc.,all of them need to adjust the structure of the sentence according to the characteristics of the vocabulary and semantics to make the translation smooth and easy to understand.And the translation should be equivalent to the original content,and maintain the objective,accurate and rigorous characteristics of the scientific and technological text.All in all,Catford’s translation has profound guiding significance for scientific translation.
