A Translation Project Report On The Ultimate College Student Health Handbook(Excerpts)under The Guidance Of Newmark’s Text Typology Theory

The health problems of contemporary college student have been one of the most popular topics in recent years,and more and more people begin to pay attention to the health of college students.This translation report aims to arouse college students’ attention to their health by translating the health handbook,and offer guidance and help them when they have health problems.Besides,this report will set an example for the same type texts,and enrich the types of health handbooks.The translation materials are drawn from The Ultimate College Student Health Handbook written by Jill Grimes,Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of the book are selected for translation,which mainly focus on the health problems with head and brain,with 11 sections and about 13000 words.This health handbook mainly discusses the relevant knowledge of college student physical and mental health,simulates the health status of college students in the way of hypothetical scenarios,explains the causes of the situation,gives appropriate suggestions on prevention and treatment,and also gives some tips on some health problems.The book has both the professionalism of medical texts and the readability of popular science texts.Its hypothetical scenarios can increase the interests and sense of college students and make them accept its content easily.Under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology theory,this report focuses on the difficulties of medical texts,including the translation of professional terms,long sentences,complex sentences and paragraphs.In this translation report,the translator mainly uses the method of communicative translation,assisted with semantic translation.During the translation,translator translated professional terms on the basis of medical professional dictionaries and online translation tools,and adopted literal translation,amplification,transliteration and other methods to deal with the names of medical terms and abbreviations in the text,including slang translation;passive sentences,long sentences and complex sentences are translated by sequential translation,inversion and division;The method of paragraph translation is mainly achieved through adding conjunction words and adjusting sentence order.Through writing this translation report,the translator not only improves her translation skills,but also deepens her understanding of Newmark’s text typology theory.In medical texts,Newmark’s text typology theory can help translators convey text information flexibly and accurately,and achieve ideal translation.
